About the Surrey Playing Fields
The organisation was founded in 1927 to ensure that there would be sufficient playing fields in Surrey. It is still operating 90 years later.
Surrey Playing Fields is the operating name of Surrey County Playing Fields Association, a registered charity and an unincorporated body governed by its own rules. It has no registered or principal office and contact is through the Trustees, usually the Secretary.
The charity is governed by an Executive Committee of Trustees and officers who carry out the management functions of the charity.
The Executive Committee normally meets bi-monthly to which advisory members are invited to attend. The Trustees meet separately to consider operational and financial matters, to approve normal grant applications and to make recommendations for new loans that are approved by the Executive Committee.
The Trustees serve throughout a year. They are elected at each annual general meeting for the ensuing year; there is no restriction on the number of years they can hold office. Trustees are selected for their relevant experience and for the breadth of contribution they can offer the charity. The composition of the Trustees is kept under regular review and new Trustees are suitably briefed as to their responsibilities before they are appointed.
The advisory members of the Executive Committee are representatives of Surrey county sports organisations, clubs and voluntary national organisations considered appropriate to the role of the Surrey Playing Fields. They attend meetings by the Executive Committee which are held every 2 months.
We work closeley with National Playing Fields (Fields in Trust) to secure fields and we apply their "Beyond the 6 Acre Standard" when considering planning matters. We also keep abreast of standards issued by Sport England and apply these when we consider appropriate.
We have a number of organisations in sport, play and provision of leiure facilities who we work closely with. It is important that these are partnerships so we conribute to them as well as there advising us.
Planning applications in the County affecting sports fields and facilities are reviewed and, where appropriate, objections are made in some cases in consultation and partnership with Fields in Trust. In addition, we review and comment on local plans, playing pitch strategies and play plans.
Surrey Playing Fields has no paid staff and hence all its Trustees and officers are volunteers. This is considered appropriate in view of the size and activities of the charity. The Association has to hold about: Officers, teh Executive Committee, Council Representatives, Partners.
